Mention the phrase "Stem Cell Research" and one will here a wide range of passionate reactions. The man who started all of this was Dr. Michael West. In late 2001 he made a dramatic discovery. He created the initial human embryonic stem cells which was published in the Journal of Regenerative Medicine.
The end results from multiple perspectives were dramatic on all side. Some were hailing it as one of the greatest scientific breakthroughs of all time. Others viewed it with a moral and ethical uneasiness. Dr. West on the other hand, was very apolitical about the whole subject. He reiterated that his (and his company and colleagues) intention was exclusively for therapies relating to diseases such as AIDS, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and the like. Nothing whatsoever was related to the subject of cloning or other disturbing subjects. It was a potential anti-aging therapy, along the lines of HGH as well. (For more information on HGH or human growth hormone, please go to www.hghplus.net)
Life Extension scientists have taken a unique twist on the whole subject. For years, this group has promoted the use of powerful, effective anti-aging therapies such as HGH (human growth hormone), DHEA, progesterone or testosterone replacement therapies etc. Through their research they have noted the use of natural substances that act as a "Nutritional Stem Cell Therapy."
Bone marrow is the major tissue that correlates with stem cell activity in adults. Why? Stem cells in the bone marrow produce major components of blood -- red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. These cells develop over time and are released into the blood itself and have impactful functions such as improved immunity, providing energy and carrying nutrition to the entire system, to name a few.
Nutritionists have been promoting the use of folic acid, iron, Vitamin D, B-complex and B-12 for a very long time. Herbs and teas such as Dong Qui, Green Tea and Bupleurem have been used for centuries to boost blood levels. Foods such as blueberries, raspberries and green leafy vegetables are also known blood boosters. The reason is the aforementioned substances are needed for bone marrow stem cells to differentiate into mature, healthy red blood cells.
Based on these and other known nutrients, scientists are now speculating that specific nutrition could in fact, be the catalyst for healthy stem cells via a natural route. Recently a series of experiences was completed testing certain nutrition and the effect it has on blood markers such as CD34+ and CD133+, stem cell surface antigen receptors (they are basically markers for the presence of stem cells).
The results?
A combination of blueberry, green tea, Vitamin D3 and carnosine increased these stem cells by an amazing 68%! The implication of the aforementioned is rather dramatic, particularly when a well known drug only produced a 42% increase.
This is another example of standard medicine finally "proving" what Natural Medicine has known for centuries.
